1 Day Mkomazi National Park Safari
Mkomazi National Park safari. Mkomazi National Park is situated in the Kilimanjaro and Tanga regions of northeastern Tanzania, close to the Kenyan border. It was established as a game reserve in 1951 and upgraded to be a national park in 2006. The Acacia-Commiphora vegetation dominates the 3,200-square-kilometer area, which borders Kenya’s Tsavo West National area.
In reality, the region commonly referred to as “Mkomazi” is the combination of two former game reserves: the Mkomazi Game Reserve in the west (in Same District, Kilimanjaro Region) and the Umba Game Reserve in the east (in Lushoto District, Tanga Region); in official documents, they are occasionally referred to as the Mkomazi/Umba Game Reserves. Mkomazi is larger than the other, has a longer shared boundary with Tsavo West National Park, and has a more varied topography and habitat. “Mkomazi” shall refer to both the Mkomazi and Umba reserves collectively throughout the remainder of this section.

An early start is crucial. After being picked up from the hotel and given a parked lunch, you will drive directly to Mkomazi National Park, which is about 120 kilometres from Moshi Town. The drive will take about an hour. Once you reach the park, you will enter it and begin the game drive, where you should expect to see giraffes, antelopes, zebras, and, if you’re lucky, lions and elephants, among many other animals.
Although a visit to the Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary can also be arranged, it will incur additional fees because it is a private sanctuary for the rhino projects. Nevertheless, visitors can visit in support of the Mkomazi rhino project. The safari will continue with a game drive until late in the evening before returning to Moshi, where you will be dropped off at your booked hotel.
