Inside Masai Mara National Reserve

Located in the Rift Valley region of Narok, Kenya, the Maasai Mara, often known locally as The Mara and occasionally spelt Masai Mara, is a sizable National Game Reserve that shares borders with Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. The Maasai People, the area’s indigenous inhabitants who are thought to have migrated there from the Nile Basin, are honoured by the Reserve’s name. From a distance, the Maasai people describe the landscape as “Mara,” which translates to “spotted” in their own tongue. The overabundance of short, bushy trees that litter the landscape is the cause of this.

The Maasai Mara National Reserve has 1,510 square kilometres of huge, endless grasslands that meet short, sweet grasses, providing plenty of food for the region’s many herbivores. Just 520 square kilometres of the present-day region, including the Mara Triangle, were included in the 1961 designation of the Mara as a wildlife sanctuary. When it was designated as an A Game Reserve, it was further expanded eastward to encompass 1,821 square kilometres.

Located in the northernmost portion of the region, the Mara is a part of the vast 25,000 square km Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. The Siria/Oloololo escarpment to the west, the Maasai Mara pastoral ranches to the north, east, and west, and the Serengeti National Park to the south all abut the National Reserve. The Maasai Mara National Reserve, the Mara Triangle, and a number of Masai Conservancies, such as Koiyaki, Lemek, Ol Chorro Oirowua, Mara North, Olkinyei, Siana, Maji Moto, Naikara, Ol Derkesi, Kerinkani, Oloirien, and Kimintet, are all included in the Mara ecosystem.
