Rwenzori Mountain National Park
The park is located in Kasese district the southwestern part of Uganda bordering Congo with the third highest peak in Africa – Mount Margherita.
The park is rich in Flora and Fauna and is a natural habitat of 70 mammals and over 217 bird species.
Animals in the park include; leopards, elephants, bushbucks, giant forest hogs, bushbucks, olive baboons, blue monkeys, black and white Columbus monkeys, and many more. Birds like the Kivu ground thrush, collard Apalis, barred long-tailed cuckoo, purple breasted sunbird plus other species.
The mountain provides stunning views that make Hiking to the peak a major activity that takes place at Mt. Rwenzori National Park. Day Hikes for tourists who don’t want to reach the top of the mountain are also organized.

Detailed Itinerary 7 Days Rwenzori Mountains Trekking Uganda
Day 1: Arrival at Entebbe international airport
Upon arrival, your designated driver /guide will transfer you to your booked accommodation for overnight.
Day 2: Transfer to Kasese district – Rwenzori Mountain
After breakfast, the journey to the western region of Uganda will commence with exciting views of the flora and fauna. Have lunch en route and proceed with the drive until Kasese district where you will overnight preparing for the hike the next morning.
Day 3: Nyakalengija to John Matte Hut.
The calculated distance to be covered for the day is from 16000m to 3420m and this simply means that long distances are to be covered every day requiring one to be strong, healthy, and speedy.
Upon arrival at Nyakalengija at the Rwenzori mountaineering services, you will be briefed and given hiking equipment. The provision of guides and porters that take the lead through the local communities, montane forests, tropical and bamboo forests as the hike progresses is available. Have a stopover at Nyabitaba hut for lunch before proceeding to John matte where you will have dinner and overnight.
Day 4: John matte to Elena Hut.
The distance to Elena Hut is 4563m. So after an early breakfast at John matte, you proceed with the hike through the rocky and slippery hills as you cross different streams and rivers. Different plant species like the everlasting flowers, giant lobelia among others will be seen and at this point, you will also be able to spot the Margherita and Alexandra peaks. Continue with the hike until Elena hut where you will have dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Hike to the top (from Elena hut to Bujuku camp)
At this point, you will hike 3930m in order to get to Bujuku camp. The hike will start very early like at 3 am passing through the rocky area with the help of the ropes as we hike spotting the Stanley glacier. Continue with the hike through the slippery rocks to the Margherita glacier and finally to the Margherita Peak which is the highest point of Rwenzori Mountain. Take pictures, relax a bit as we plan to descend back to Elena hut for lunch and then Bujuku hut for dinner and overnight.
Day 6: Bujuku – Nyabitaba Hut
The distance to be covered is 2660m. Therefore after breakfast, you will move through the upper big bog descending through the lower big bog to John matte where you will relax, have lunch and then proceed to Nyabitaba hut for an overnight and dinner.
Day 7: Nyabitaba – Nyakalengija
After breakfast at Nyabitaba, proceed to move to Nyakalengija marking the end of the hiking safari at Mt. Rwenzori.
